Why do you love or hate Scrolling shooters?

Post by Alala Kuran on Tue Jul 12, 2011 3:52 pm

White Len : Just wondering what reasons you like scrolling shooters? I do
myself, and several reasons why be them non-original or reasonable. Very Happy

My first reason why I somewhat have a thing for them is that I found out that
quite a batch of them were released in my birthyear directly; some titles which
I found out that were are Thunderforce 2, Silpheed 1, Super R-Type, and Gradius
2. I'm sure a few others were as well, but those titles were confirmed hence
they caught my attention quickly when I started playing them or their series.
Not completely sure but I think even a Contra game was released as well
somewhere there.

My second reason is that usually they have some catchy or cool soundtrack,
especially some of these up-to-date ones. On another hand some of the old
ones even from the Sega Genesis are still even better sounding than a few
songs I've been listening to lately for sure, lol! Laughing

Okay now here's the main factor which I never told many people however......
one main fact indeed of why I have a serious taste for scrolling shooters be it
horizontal or vertical is that I can call these types a hybrid: Puzzle + Action at
the same time; these kinds of games leave no room for error, and they're
usually fast paced enough to keep a pilot/shooter/shikigami overlord thinking
as well as keeping up with the action and attacking sharply, all at the same
time. It's essential to utilize memorization in some areas, but at the same time
also keep an eye out for any new curve-ball tossed at me every now and then. Some of these games do have a same pattern, some do not. They always keep me thinking as well as acting out too. Laughing

Keeping up with memorization, keeping watch for what's flying through a mess
at me directly from what's only a flank (attention mastery), and no room for
mistakes (pass up the wrong thing and whoops! No turning back.), it's food for
thought as well as action in a package. Love effect

Other games don't usually do all this for me; maybe only one or the other out of
the three, maybe even two out of three if bringing attention as well, but not like
these kinds.

Okay that was a few of mine, so what's your reasons?

for me, depends on the weapon setup. Gradius, i didn't care much for since you had to acquire so many power ups before you can purchase an upgrade, so to speak, rather than it auto upgrading. R-Type III was very fun for me, despite having to use save states throughout the whole thing. and i have some hentai shmup i got from that blog collection which is also a good challenge. but recently, i had watched the old Swat Kats cartoon series, and it got me hankering for a full-fledged aviation sim, so i got a couple for my psp. but after watching that cartoon, i want a freakin' video game made for it on modern systems

lolz! Those are some great reasons there! Mostly I did because they look fun and the music most of all, but I never took time to think of that myself actually. Shocked

Not sure if that counts, but for me it's the difficulty since I usually only end up playing danmaku(bullethell). Also unique scoring systems or game mechanics in combination with danmaku amaze me a lot and keep my interest for a long time. As a final point, I enjoy memorizing bullet patterns and mastering them slowly but steadily.
